Retain Staff and Faculty

Being a part of the UBC community means being a part of an organization that values dedication, belonging and purpose.

We strive to provide our faculty and staff with the chance to experience growth opportunities, both personally and professionally.

We believe that the keys to retention are to recognize achievement and initiative; to support faculty and staff as they strive to grow and develop, as part of our culture of life-long learning; and to help faculty and staff achieve a balance of work responsibilities and personal responsibilities.

What have we accomplished?

We have developed a Learning Portal, where faculty and staff can find learning opportunities on campus.

The university opened five new daycare centres in Vancouver in 2009. UBC Child Care Services added 108 new spaces (infant to five years of age). We continue to support child care availability for our faculty, staff and students.

We have collaborated with UBC Information Technology (IT) to develop a career pathing framework pilot for IT professionals.

We have expanded the University’s recognition opportunities for staff.

What are we doing?

We are working to:

  • Develop a Career Navigation framework for faculty and staff.
  • Create a supportive and practical method to facilitate staff job exchanges, secondments and job sharing.
  • Implement self-service access to professional development funds.
  • Establish a committee of faculty to recommend a framework to recognize service of faculty members.
  • Continue to increase the number of child care spaces at the Vancouver campus.
  • Implement many of the actions recommended in the Report of the Task Force on Family Responsibilities, and our thanks to those who made it happen (Family Responsibilities Task Force Acknowledgments).
  • Conducting a Strategic Employment Systems Review (SESR) in the Faculty of Arts to identify systemic barriers that may hinder career progression.
  • Develop the ability of faculty and staff to hold performance conversations.
  • Implement a pilot for a performance development process for faculty.
