In 2008, UBC partnered with Uniterra to send six UBC staff members to volunteer in developing countries. This is an annual program, with participants spending their annual vacation time volunteering overseas.
Eligible UBC staff can apply to volunteer during their vacation time, for two to four weeks. Before you leave on your trip, we have a two-day pre-departure training session for all successful applicants. While you are overseas, participants share their knowledge and experience with the local volunteer organization. When you return to Canada, you have an opportunity to share your experiences with the larger UBC community.
In addition to supporting the program financially, UBC works with Uniterra to select the participants for Leave for Change. UBC also works with the returning participants to help them share their inspiring stories with the entire community.
Uniterra provides Leave for Change pre-departure training, and covers the cost of vaccinations, insurance, airfare, lodging and a daily stipend for each participant. In addition, the program coordinates transportation and in-field logistics, and monitors security and well-being of volunteers during their time overseas.
