This year, eight UBC staff members are recognized for their contributions of excellence in categories such as enhancing the UBC experience, leadership and creativity, global citizenship, and emerging leaders as part of the University’s awards and recognition program.

The President’s Staff Awards (Vancouver Campus) recognize the personal achievements and contributions of staff to UBC and to the vision and goals of the University.

President’s Staff Award Recipients (Vancouver Campus)

Enhancing the UBC Experience

John Amor, Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences

John Amor, Computing Manager for the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, has stayed ahead of the curve in computer technology, to support Earth and Ocean Sciences with their evolving computing needs for research and learning.

One of John’s many projects at UBC was the development of an innovative method of processing large quantities of digital data collected as a result of seismic field experiments for Canada’s national geoscience project, LITHOPROBE. John’s work was one of the factors contributing to the success of the $5-million research project.

In the eyes of the nominator, “Without John Amor, the department would not be as successful as it is.”

Gene Boado, Building Operations

Every day, Gene Boado, Building Service Worker, supports those in the UBC and arts communities who use Freddy Wood Theatre by keeping the facility in pristine condition and excellent order.

As one department head put it: “In my experience… no one has provided a higher level of maintenance service than Gene. He keeps the substantial, well-used facilities of Frederic Wood spotless inside and out, no small task given the multiple functions of the building … He is absolutely a role model for us all. Quiet, dignified, yet friendly and approachable, he goes about his business skilfully and efficiently without ever calling attention to himself. Gene is the kind of player every team needs.”

Melanie Groom, Human Resources

Melanie Groom, now HR Service Centre Coordinator for Human Resources, managed the payroll for Land and Building Systems for 23 years. Melanie is described as ‘one of the most important people in LBS’ by three HR directors because of her efficient management and reconciliation of payroll and time cards for over 900 Building Operations staff at a time. In the words of one colleague, “Melanie’s familiarity with the history, process and people made her an invaluable asset to both the leadership and staff” of Building Operations.

With Human Resources’ Work-Life and Relocation Service Centre, Melanie is an excellent ambassador for UBC, promoting the benefits of working at UBC and helping incoming faculty and staff to manoeuvre in their new roles.

Global Citizenship

Lynn Newman, Faculty of Land and Food Systems

Lynn Newman, Assistant Dean, Students, Director, Undergraduate Programs in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, is a mentor to her students, giving advice and supporting student initiatives.

As part of her commitment as chair and co-chair to the UBC United Way campaign, Lynn has worked tirelessly to support the UBC community as well as the greater community served by the United Way. Lynn also exemplifies good citizenship in her personal time, through her volunteer work with the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers.

Leadership and Creativity

Chad Hyson, Office of the VP Students

Chad Hyson, Executive Coordinator, Office of the Vice-President Students, connects with students using social media channels and his personal connections with student networks to ensure he know what is happening “on the ground” at UBC, to best support students.

During his time at UBC, Chad has been instrumental in supporting UBC traditions such as Imagine UBC, the Student Leadership Conferences, and the Terry Project

In the words of the student who nominated Chad for a President’s Staff Award: “Chad cares about helping to create, develop and contribute to a strong ethos of work as well as a strong ethos of caring. He models excellent balance, commitment to personal and professional development. He encourages staff to be ‘where the students are.’ ”

Jeff Miller, Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology

Jeff Miller, Senior Manager, Distance and Blended Learning, has made outstanding contributions to the university as a course author, instructor, and course designer.

A colleague writes: “I learned from Jeff that a great leader doesn’t have to flash his own excellence and superiority, but rather inspires and helps his members to do their best and pursue their excellence to meet the goals of the team.”

Another colleague states: “In every way, Jeff exemplifies how staff members are educators at UBC.”

Emerging Leadership

Patrick Ho, Department of Microbiology and Immunology

Patrick Ho, Computer Support Specialist in Microbiology and Immunology, is dedicated to providing the most up-to-date and streamlined computing experience for everyone in the department. In the words of one colleague: “It is no overstatement to say that the current state of our department’s highly structured and integrated network is due to his efforts, which he conducted single-handedly.”

Patrick has taken a leadership role in the Life Sciences Institute by helping to form a collaborative group of IT professionals to provide integrated computer service and support for LSI researchers.

Kyle Nelson, UBC Robson Square

Kyle Nelson, Events Manager at UBC Robson Square, has dedicated time and energy to creating more sustainable practices at UBC Robson Square, including moving the catering menu to 100% Oceanwise seafood certified and using fair trade tea and coffee in all events. UBC Sustainability applauds Robson Square’s composting practices, and even Xerox has chimed in, recognizing Robson Square’s sustainability practices.

Kyle leads by example, dedicating his time to building a strong team. Kyle focuses on strengthening communication with his team and peers, as well as with Robson Square’s wide range of clients. He is never too busy to help others explore new opportunities to grow and learn.
